I was reminded this week of the value of data over instinct. I was observing a class for which I helped with the high level design work but not the detailed design nor development. One of the exercises struck me as a little silly, running the risk of trivializing and undermining the content.
But it was clear from the ensuing discussion that the exercise achieved exactly what it was supposed to! Nice. It’s easy, especially as you gain experience, to overestimate your ability to predict how your audience will react to a given piece of instruction, but there’s nothing like piloting with real members of the target population.
