Stimulating Learning through Poor Design?

A few years ago, new research came out suggesting that by making instruction and information harder to read (e.g., a light or difficult to read typeface), people learned more, presumably because it made them think harder.

It was really an interesting finding. But, alas, disconfirming evidence had since become available in the form of a larger study that could not replicate the results.
